Our Story
BarkClad products catch the eye of anyone who sees them, born from Danny's rich heritage in the timber industry.

Growing up as a second generation logger, Danny Heatherly was able to learn everything about tree species like tulip poplar bark. Being in the woods every day supported growth in how to log with sustainable practice, what species to cut and harvest, and when harvesting is best.
Danny, Nylenda, and their three children have devoted decades to harvesting and marketing this unique bark, working each harvest season to gather the annual supply. When they realized engineered bark siding could broaden what bark could do, SmartBark was born.
The Heatherly family embodies the true spirit of American entrepreneurship, where integrity and deep-seated Christian values guide their business.
Historical roots, modern revolution
The concept of bark siding isn't new. It traces back to ancient Native American practices and was notably used with the now-nearly-extinct American Chestnut. BarkClad carries that tradition forward with natural poplar bark and patented SmartBark engineered siding.

See how we source our bark
Our bark comes from trees already being harvest for the furniture and plywood industry. Where the bark on poplar trees would typically be debarked and turned into mulch, we are upcycling the bark for a higher purpose to be used for your home. Another way we achieve sustainability is that we only harvest mature poplar trees, leaving the younger trees to flourish.
